What are Coils?
Coils are the part of the tank that is used to heat up the liquid to make vapour. The atomiser is composed of a coil wrapped around a wicking material. This material absorbs the e-liquid you put in a tank. When the device is activated, the power heats up the coils which vaporises the liquid.
Coil Resistance
Coils are measured in ohms (Ω). Most brands have their own coils in different resistance levels, which can help to customise the vaping experience. Coils with a lower resistance result in more vapour being produced when the device iis activated, which coils with a higher resistance give off a cooler vape.
When Do I Need To Replace My Coils?
No coils can last forever. Residue, or "coil gunk,", eventually begins forming on the coil. If it gets big enough it starts burning, giving you a burnt taste when you vape. The burnt taste persists until the coil is replaced.
When using sweeter e-liquids, the coil gunk can form quicker, as the sweeteners tend to leave deposits on the coil because they don't vaporise cleanly. If you are not pleased with your vape's flavour, or you find that your cotton has begun to darken, it's time to change your coil.
How To Replace Coils
You'll need to first disassemble your vape completely to change your coils, but this isn't that difficult. While each vape is a little different, usually all you need to do is screw out the tank from the bottom of your vape. Next, turn the tank upside down and twist anticlockwise to remove the tank.
It's best to replace your coil when there's little to no e-liquid left, so empty the tank out. The e-liquid should be poured into the bin. If you want to be extra careful, first pour it into something extremely absorbant, like cat litter.
Pre-saturate the wick before installing the coil to avoid getting a burnt wick. You can do this by adding a couple of drops of e-liquid on the coil. To install the coil, first unscrew the existing coil from the bottom of the tank, then replace it with the pre-saturated coil. Finally, screw the tank back on and fill it with e-liquid and you're ready to go!
How Do I Avoid Coil Gunk?
The first thing you can try is eliminating flavours with sweeteners in. Some flavours, such as chocolate or pastries, are infamous for depending on sweeteners. While you may love an e-liquid's taste, even when it kills the coils, if you look for other similar e-liquids you may find an even better one without sweeteners. There are many fantastic e-liquids which do not use sweeteners. Try to switch your dark e-juices for something clear if you can.
Also, try using an e-liquid with less VG in. Something with a VG ratio of 70% or more is usually considered "Max VG." While uncommon, e-liquids can go as high as 100% VG. This can be irritating to some cloud-chasers or general VG-lovers who have to frequently change their coils. The solution for this is simple, just choose an e-liquid with less than 70% VG. Some brands offer 60% VG as their default, while others may allow you to choose your VG / PG ratio.
Probably the easiest option is simply altering your vaping settings, technique and frequency should help to avoid coil gunk. Choose shorter, sharper draws instead of long pulls. When you feel like chain vaping, do your best to avoid it. When you experience the urge to chain vape to fulfill your nicotine demands, it's time to increase the nicotine strength.
How Do I Choose The Best Coils?
Like everything, there is no one coil that's best for everyone, and everyone has different preferences. The first thing to do is look for coils from the same brand as your kit or tank, since not all coils work with every tank. A lot of vape brands usually bring out compatible coils alongside their tanks/kits, so you can easily match them up.
Next, you need to decide on the resistance. Manufacturers often make their coils in different resistances so you can choose one that suits you. Before buying the coils, think what wattage you usually vape at and pick a coil ideal for that wattage range.
